Dear Friend,
I have been in the mattress and home furnishings business for years now. One thing that experience has given me is an intense passion for bedding and what it can do for improving everyone's quality of life including our babies. After-all we spend a third of our lives in bed. That passion has kept me looking not only for the best bedding available BUT a BETTER way to sell it; through facts & education.
The first thing I will not compromise when choosing a product to offer you is healthfulness. It MUST be good not only for you but everyone it touches. ALL of our products are carefully selected for the health of you and your family. The second thing is good old-fashioned value. Our products MUST be worth what you pay for them. They must not only last years longer than other bedding but must contribute to your comfort and enjoyment for every year you own them. That is our pledge to you: health and value for years to come .
I hope you can take time to watch the video on 10 American Babies created by The Environmental Working Group. If you are considering a memory polyurethane foam mattress, here is why you should reconsider. It also answers, "What is a Toxic Bedroom?"
There are two types of latex, (1) "Natural Rubber" and (2) SBR, "Styrene Butadine Rubber", synthetic latex. We only sell Natural Rubber, with organic cotton & organic wool. Which is SAFE & NON-Toxic.
Here is what everyone else sells: Polyurethane and Synthetic Latex Foam. It is cheap to make, doesn't last and is toxic. I am disturbed by salesmen who claim they have organic all natural rubber latex mattresses when in fact they don't. Just because they have some blended latex in their mattress they are making outrageous claims. You can read their nice brochures over and over, it will not point out the fact it is a synthetic mattress until you start digging. I will show you how to distinguish between the natural and the synthetic. If you think you want to compare, we are more than happy to help point out the differences. Just to help you out, I have listed 5 ways to tell the difference below.
1. Organic Certificates
In sharp contrast, organic mattresses have organic certificates. This means they are made without the use of pesticides or toxic chemicals. If you want to make sure you are getting the real thing, it is best to deal with an organic mattress store, because they specialize in organics.
Also, people can claim their mattress are all natural or 100% genuine latex, lot's of fancy made up latex sounding names, when in fact it is synthetic, quilted to polyester, has polyurethane base, (we call that green washing) not as Eco friendly as they claim, why is that important?
2. Read the law label
"SBR" Latex foam, not to be confused with all-natural rubber, is made from styrene butadine, which is toxic to the lungs, liver & brain. Plus, being synthetic, they must also pour in chemicals to make it less flammable. Not sure? Look at their law-label. Usually it is located at the top of the mattress, kinda hidden. Sometimes the dealer will remove it because they don't want you to see it is made with FOAM. It is illegal for them to deliver your mattress without a law label or to tear it off. Only you the consumer can remove that law label by law.
Also, don't be mislead when the salesperson claims there are no chemicals in their mattress. Since when is a mattress made out of petroleum oil, chemical flame retardants & boric acid not contain chemicals?
Foam is cheap to make, easy to over-price and run on sale. The last thing they want is you to be able to compare mattresses, especially on-line. We are not afraid of that because we know we have the best product at true Internet pricing. We started out as a Internet business & now we have a showroom at Internet prices. Polyurethane mattresses have a planned obsolescence of 5 years. $1,000 every 5 years is $6,000 in 30 years. Invest half of that in a Savvy Rest, which will last decades.
3. Quilted to polyester
Two other ways to tell if the mattress is synthetic, if you see quilting. Manufactures must quilt to polyester. Therefore they must use flame retardant chemicals such as boric acid (rat poison) & antimony (a heavy metal such as lead and mercury.) Often they will try to dazzle you with their cashmere wool cover or organic cover, but the rest of the mattress is completely synthetic and full of toxic flame retardants.
Here are the facts: The CPSC says "Children absorb .5 mg antimony every night, they have 63 times more antimony poisoning in their body due to chemical flame retardants than the FDA claims is safe. Adults 12%, you absorb antimony every night as you sleep.
Our quilting is to organic wool which is completely safe and passes government regulation for flame retardancy naturally without the use of flame retardant chemicals.
4. Layers glued together with toxic solvents
No need to huff glue all night long in your sleep. The fourth way to tell if the mattress is toxic is the layers are glued together with solvents. Manufactures must glue them together so they don't shift & creep up on you at night.
Savvy Rest has all the benefits of memory foam without all the problems. It relieves pressure better, no motion transfer, sleeps cooler naturally, more affordable and doesn't break down as quickly because it is not made with polyurethane foam.
Memory Foam is more toxic than your regular mattress because it has even more chemicals poured in on it. Simply put, memory foam is polyurethane foam with more chemicals added to it.
The government does not require a manufacturer or retailer to distinguish between synthetic and natural latex on their mattresses or law-labels. But, third party research does distinguish between natural and synthetic latex mattress manufacturers. If you want to pay for the testing, you can but it is just easier to buy an organic mattress from us.
Unlike synthetic SBR rubber, all-natural rubber lasts longer & doesn't take body impressions or break down like polyurethane does. If the mattress has lots of wool padding, you can get body impressions from all that wool. But, not with a Savvy Rest. You can also expect a Savvy Rest to last decades depending upon your weight. See Organic Mattress Reviews.
We have the only 100% organic mattress in the state of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Just because someone else sells a mattress that has organic cover doesn't mean the whole mattress is organic. You can read the law label to tell this. Unless it is synthetic rubber, then you can't tell the difference by feeling it or smelling it, reading the law label, there is absolutely no way to tell for sure without taking it to a lab for testing.
Savvy Rest is the only organic mattress manufacturer in the country that has not only organic cotton but also organic wool and organic latex. Every one else just sells Eco Safer wool and latex. The process to manufacture Dunlop latex is much better for the environment than any other method of foam production, polyurethane foam, soy foam, memory foam also including Talalay latex. Be warned Dunlop latex is often synthetic. 95% of the latex made in the USA is synthetic latex. We use only organic all-natural latex.
5. Does the manufacture also make synthetic mattresses?
To make it easier, we come from the "Organic" industry, the mattress stores down the street come from the "Urethane" industry. They specialize in making mattresses as cheaply as they can and selling them for as much as they can. Even if it means claiming their mattresses are "organic" or "all natural." I guess every one wants to be like us but they aren't willing to pay the price because it is easier to deceive the customer. Many times they will say, their mattress is "all natural latex", when in fact there may only be a couple of inches of latex, it is synthetic blended and the rest is polyurethane foams.
We have videos on how natural latex is made but no one want's to make a video on how polyurethane foam or memory foam is made? That's because they don't want you to see the 55 gallon drum of petroleum oil, the chemical flame retardants, the liners that are soaked in Boric Acid is used in their production. Because if you did see that you probably wouldn't want to buy one of those mattresses.
In sharp contrast our mattress is grown from rubber sap, picked from cotton, sheared from sheep. That is it! Our sources for making your mattress goes on to make more mattresses and remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Not maufactured in some chemical plant. Our Dunlop process is earth friendly, the Talalay process not so much. The synthetic process is not, a large concern for living near urethane plants burning down because they use such highly flammable ingredients.
A lot of people sleep hot, it doesn't help when the synthetic mattress & bedding you are sleeping on makes you sleep even hotter! If you want to sleep cooler, go with natural fibers, if you want to breathe better, go organic.
Wool is a great body temperature regulator. Cool in the summer, cozy in the winter.
Pure silk is amazing too.
Thank you for your time & hope to hear from you soon.
If you have any questions or are a registered charitable organization, we would love to hear from you, we are always looking for ways to "Free Cycle" & help the homeless with mattress donations.
Warmly,
Gary & Joyce Robertson
